[zephyr_dropcaps style="withbg" firstcolor="#333333" bgcolor=""]Technology makes life easier to track in so many ways, especially for weight loss.[/zephyr_dropcaps] In my last post, I mentioned how I have lost 20 lbs. in the past 6 months through just diet and exercise (aka "the old fashioned way"). A great complement to the "old fashioned" way is the "new fashioned" technology that can help track and motivate the way through the weight loss journey. Here is a round up of some of my favorite apps and gadgets that have kept me shedding the pounds month after month.
My Fitbit Flex continues to kick my butt daily. It tracks my daily steps and lets me know the status of my progress towards my 10,000 daily step goal. For me that is the minimum amount of activity I need everyday I need to keep my metabolism constantly revving. One of my favorite things about the gadget is that it syncs to a great phone app that you can track your stats and progress. You can also challenge other friends and family that wear Fitbits to daily and weekly challenges.
This app is perfect for tracking food and exercise daily. Best of all, it's FREE! It has a huge food database and the iPhone app even has a barcode scanner that you can automatically scan in the food you eat as you go throughout your day. The app also allows you to set your own macro nutrients. So for example, if you know you want to consume 120 grams of protein a day, you can set that up and it will show you the progress towards your goal.
DietBet is an app and website that allows you to place bets and make a pool with your friends and family to lose 4% of your body weight in a month. The bets usually start at $25 and up. DietBet referees monitor your weigh ins and weigh outs. The winners split the pot. When I've won, I usually only make $10-$15 over my bet, so for me it's more about not losing my initial bet rather than winning tons of money. Another cool thing is that DietBet encourages you to share your progress to social media like Twitter and FaceBook to help motivate you. I've found that this helps me be more accountable. I also love being competive :)
Withings Wifi Body Scale
My hubs bought this scale for me as a birthday present almost 4 years ago and I'm still OBSESSED with it. Not only does it show your weight, BMI and body fat percentage, but it also syncs up to a phone app which graphs out your progress. Also, it can automatically sync to other apps, some I've mentioned above like DietBet and FitBit.
I definitely recommend starting by adding something easy and free like MyFitnessPal into your regimen if you're looking to shed a few pounds or just be healthier. Another idea is that a lot of newer phones, like the iPhones, already have pedometers built into them, so you can easily just start tracking your steps on your walks with your phone.
